Disrupting Healthcare Inequities: So EveryBODY Can Move in WA

At Cornerstone P&O, we are inspired by the transformative power of mobility and its crucial role in the lives of individuals with limb loss and differences. Our commitment to improving the quality of life for our clients is a beacon of hope, supporting initiatives that advocate for equitable access to essential prosthetic and orthotic care. One such remarkable initiative is the organization So Every BODY Can Move, which is at the forefront of disrupting healthcare inequities across the United States.

The Public Health Problem

Millions of Americans living with limb loss, limb differences, and mobility impairments face significant barriers in accessing life-changing prosthetic and orthotic care. These hurdles include situations where individuals cannot afford the necessary prosthetic or orthotic devices due to inadequate insurance coverage, prohibitive out-of-pocket costs, and denials of coverage deeming these critical aids as not medically necessary. Without appropriate care, these individuals risk using improper devices, leading to physical harm and sedentary lifestyles accompanied by severe health complications like obesity and depression.

The Vision of So Every BODY Can Move

So Every BODY Can Move is unwavering in its dedication to ensuring that all individuals, regardless of age, have access to prosthetic and orthotic care that allows them to engage in physical activity and exercise. The organization has developed model legislation to correct these widespread inequities by mandating state commercial plans to offer prosthetic and orthotic care coverage at levels equivalent to the federal Medicare program. This initiative, Insurance Fairness, seeks comprehensive care for physical activity needs.

Nationwide Legislative Support

The mission of So Every BODY Can Move has garnered widespread support across the country, with several states already enacting or introducing similar legislation. Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Maine, and New Mexico have all passed laws ensuring equitable access to prosthetic and orthotic care. Additionally, states like Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, and Tennessee have introduced legislation to achieve the same goal.

Join the movement for change, Legislation for mobility

Cornerstone P&O is proud to stand with So Every BODY Can Move in advocating for these crucial legislative changes. Our leadership has actively engaged with lobbyists and senators to support the passage of nationwide legislation that guarantees access to insurance benefits, ensuring that every amputee has access to mobility. We believe that every individual deserves the opportunity to live an active and fulfilling life, free from the constraints of inadequate prosthetic and orthotic care.

Looking Ahead: Washington State Legislation in 2025

Cornerstone P&O is committed to continuing our advocacy efforts as we look to the future. We strongly urge the support of upcoming legislation in Washington State in 2025, furthering the mission of So Every BODY Can Move. This legislation aims to 1) Create orthotics and prosthetics parity, ensuring state commercial insurance plans provide coverage for orthotic and prosthetic care at a level that is equivalent to the federal Medicare program, and 2) Create coverage of orthotic and prosthetic devices for physical activity purposes for all ages by state commercial insurance plans. We believe it will bring us closer to a nation where all individuals with limb loss and limb differences have the mobility and opportunities they deserve.
